Therapist helping patient balance as part of neurologial rehabilitation

Multiple sclerosis (MS)

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune, chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. Approximately 15,000 people in Switzerland live with MS. It can cause various severe disabilities. Symptoms can vary greatly from person to person and change over time. In recent years, there has been an enormous increase in the number of pharmacological therapies that can be used to slow down the progression of the disease. With its interdisciplinary team, the Rehaklinik Zihlschlacht is optimally prepared to offer its patients the best possible treatment through an individualized approach.

  • The aim of inpatient rehabilitation is to maintain and improve a patient’s quality of life, independence and thus participation in social life – both private and professional. Individual rehabilitation goals are formulated on admission by the interdisciplinary team together with the patient.

  • Functional therapy (primarily physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and neuropsychology) aims to reduce existing symptoms and resulting impairments or prevent them from worsening. Inpatient rehabilitation can not only ameliorate functional limitations such as impaired mobility, spasticity, ataxia, dysarthria and dysphagia or bladder disorders, but can also have a positive impact on coping with the illness and the psychological consequences of the disease.

  • Comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation can alleviate various symptoms and thus the quality of life. Our interdisciplinary teams provide our patients with the best possible individual support to help them achieve their specific rehabilitation goals. These therapeutic effects often persist for months after the inpatient rehabilitation course. Many of our MS patients have already had this experience and regularly return for inpatient therapy.

  • Up to 90% of all people with MS suffer from increased fatigue. We specialize in the diagnosis and interprofessional treatment of fatigue. Various complementary therapies can also be used. The goal is to learn to deal with stress in the best possible way by developing one's own resources and strengthening one's own resilience and self-efficacy.

  • Another focus of our clinic is the treatment of spasticity. Several treatment options are available here – in addition to physiotherapy and occupational therapy, medication can be prescribed if necessary or botulinum toxin can be injected into the affected muscles under ultrasound guidance. In cases of pronounced spasticity in both legs, intrathecal administration of baclofen may help.

  • Our inpatients with MS are advised individually by specialists, but also by the MS nurse and, if necessary, by social services.

  • Our medical team is supported by specialists from various specialties (e.g. internal medicine, urology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics), who can be involved in the therapy if necessary.

  • Occupational therapy evaluation and counselling can also be carried out.

  • With all our services, we always focus on the needs of our MS patients. We want them to feel comfortable in our clinic and benefit as much as possible from our wide range of therapies so that they can achieve their goals together with our support.

Twice a month, patients have the opportunity to meet with the MS nurse at the clinic at the "MS - Cafe". The aim is to get to know each other in an informal setting and to discuss various topics.
